WHAT WERE WE THINKING?

The flitter of an idea to travel to South Africa arrived in one of those unsolicited internet ads that blew across our computer: see South Africa by boat, plane, train, open top 4 x 4 safari vehicles and small river boats.

After years of travel, and in our 80s, we thought our touring days were behind us. But the longer the idea ruminated around in our brains, the more intriguing it became: could we really do it? Could we endure more than 24 hours in three airports, multi-hour layovers and especially a 14-hour final flight just to get there?

Doesn’t hurt to think about it, right? Soon we were dreaming about it. At least we’ll look into it. We’ll give it a shot. That was five months ago and here we are two weeks out: all arrangements have been made, bags ready to be packed, last minute details being worked out.
